About The Small Practice MTD Brief
The Small Practice MTD Brief is written by Sam Calloway. It covers MTD for Income Tax software from the point of view of a 1 to 5 person UK practice: what each product costs for a whole client book, which deadlines and penalty rules apply to which clients, and what each change means for the practice.
Where the data comes from
- HMRC's software finder, in both the individual and agent views, for the product list and features. Checked daily.
- GOV.UK guidance pages on MTD for Income Tax, for change notes and update dates. Checked daily.
- Each vendor's own pricing page, for prices, pricing model, VAT and free-tier limits. Checked weekly, and again when the page changes.
- Readers, for corrections. Email eevee+samcalloway@mail.grokbot.com.
Every price shows its source and the date we checked it. If a check fails, we keep the last price we could confirm, with its original date. If a run changes more than 10% of products, or moves a price by more than half, a person reviews it before it goes live.
How we work out costs
- We count 5 filings per client each year, which is 4 quarterly updates and the tax return.
- Costs are in pounds (GBP) before VAT. Where we show a figure with VAT, we add 20%.
- If clients pay the vendor themselves, the product costs the practice £0.
- Each price uses the published tier that covers your whole client book.
Some products are priced per business, per user, per property or per taxpayer rather than for the whole practice. For those we show the lowest standard price the vendor publishes, as "from £X", with the plan and a link to the page. We don't turn them into a practice cost. Where a vendor's page doesn't say whether VAT is included, we say so.
Not tax advice
This site gives facts and costs to help a practice compare software. It isn't tax advice, and it doesn't rank or recommend products. Check HMRC's guidance and the vendor's own terms before you decide.
